Update 1 : yeah this is from a PC game.

Update 2: yeah it looks real. I can’t make up my mind. Need some “experts” to chime in.

There is no way of knowing if this is the attack in Iraq or not but holy hell this is an amazing thing.

Honestly seems like it’s from a game to me. ARMA or something, maybe?

Minor correction: that is a Phalanx CIWS (Close In Weapon System - p ronounced Sea-Whiz). It is a rotary 20mm cannon. The S eaRAM is a missile based missle interception system that uses Rolling Airframe Missiles (RAMs).

I was in Ike (CVN-69) when they tested their CIWS system. It was magical.

I also did some SeaRAM integration work on the Freedom class Littoral Combat Ships.

Wow, thanks for the insight. I’ve never seen anything like this before. It seems rather effective at shooting things moving fast from far away.

The rumours continue that the “laser-based version” of Phalanx  will be first deployed on B21 Raider.

That’s definitely cool.

It’s also interesting to see it effective (eventually). The Navy tried to get rid of the Phalanx CIWS from the Burkes in favor of just having the SeaRAM for point defense (though they eventually backtracked), and there’s a history of it failing to pro tect ships (I think it wasn’t active in those cases, but you have to wonder why commanders have so little confidence in it that they’d leave it off in hostile spaces).

I think they are essentially the same but the Centurion C-RAM (counter rockets, artillery , and mortars) is the land based system. The name change probably wasn’t necessary at all but there we go.

Just a couple things raise my suspicions.

The way the camera moves is very FPS and unnatural. I thought maybe it was some sort of mounted camera at first but I don’t think so.

The smoke trails all look exactly the same and fade out immediately

Check out the (remarkably quiet) explosion at 2 minutes in.

Yep, that would be my guess as well, but that makes them not so useful. Also scary since target identification should be the same with SeaRAM as well. Though the Phalanx system has been around forever, so it’s possible the newer units are better than they have been in the past.

Yeah those were the things I saw too, and how the cannon in the middle moves.... I think this is probably POV video off of one of the cannons?

In this particular instance, it’s not evenly distributed  all over the landscape.

We’re making do with 20 B-2 but the initial commitment for B-21 is 100 units... the buzz is that this is the most flexible mission fulfillment vehicle ever. Invisible to radar, invisible in IR, minimal acoustic signature. And, if somebody “gets lucky” and gets any kind of imaging on it, the c rew deploy  the lasers and beat back anything even remotely heading their way.

Likewise, you keep hearing “what a dog” the F-35 is, but the Israelis keep buying more, the Brits keep buying more (Block B), the Aussies want a bunch, Japan wants more and Singapore wants it. Yeah, all the allies want it because it’s not meeting the mission parameters... very plausible.

My theory remains that we’ve seen about 2% of what these platforms can do once networked together...

I think @25% of the b21 are going to be designated trainers to keep hours off the main force.

Plus when you mix in f15 missi le truck

https://www.popularmechanics.com/military/aviation/a22355833/boeing-new-f-15x/

You have a potent force, b21 knock out air defence, f22/f35 establish air superiority/ paint targets, and have f-15s pump missiles in distracting

Even the one’s we had in Afghansitan would still slew towards the aircraft and radar lock on them . Obviously we never fired on aircraft, since the Taliban didn’t have any. But I guess one C-17 pilot didn’t get the memo, he was coming into land when the gun slewed and locked on him and he popped flares and did half a barrel roll aborting the landing lol.

Ahh. You are right. I forgot, this is the military, so things wouldn’t be straightforward. C- RAM is the land based CIWS, and not related to SeaRAM.

Def a video game, because of the purple tracers (they use red like everything else ‘Murican), the way the camera moves, and the sound of the gun, etc. Here’s one from Iraq, I think . (I don’t have any videos from my training or A-stan).

Well the Air Force is intending to replace the B-1 as well, which is a bigger fleet, and one that’s been getting pretty heavy use (personally, keeping the B-52, but ditching the B-1, which is bigger, hauls a lot more, and is cheaper to operate seems silly, but either way, they’ve got old bombers to replace).

Kinja'd!!!0

Lol, nope. CIWS and C-RAM (the land based variant of CIWS system s ) systems are terminal air defenses; usually part of a SHORAD network . If they’re firing, that means whatever’s coming either punched right through or evaded all your long and medium range air defenses. Upcoming h ypersonic and standoff glide munitions will only exacerbate the challenge.

I think the Army boys and gals get some additional hardkill SHORAD systems like the Avenger, but for the Navy, if those things is firing, the only thing left to do is fire some chaff/flares/decoys and kiss your ass goodbye because anti-ship missiles are called anti-ship missiles for a reason...and they never fire just one of them.

This is why the DoD has such a hard on for laser weapons. With speed of light delivery, you can intercept threats much further out with and "infinite magazine" of shots , limited th eroetically only by the curvature of the Earth and your power generation supply

On the plus side, it’s not like anyone is going to be using stratolaunch now that its patron is dead.

On the down side, I’m still not convinced it should actually be able to fly without breaking in half.

That was my assumption as well. Looks like it got picked up by LiveLeak but most of the comments seems to call it out as a game, at least.
